At our core, we specialize in 3D scanning, which plays a crucial role in the manufacturing process across various industries.  Adopting the principle of  “Measure twice, cut once, " we help companies establish a controllable process that results in well-designed and functional end products.

3D Scanning finds problems before they become a crisis.  The key advantage of 3D scanning over other technologies is the ability to capture and analyze an accurate  and detailed representation of the scanned object.  It's akin to painting, as our scanner meticulously "paints" a point cloud that can be directly compared to the design CAD model.  In cases where a CAD model is not available, we can create one from the 3D scan itself.

Since 3D Scanning can be applied to the design and manufacturing process at nearly any step, it might help to discuss some examples:

Design Cycle - Industrial designers often start with physical models like clay models for new product designs.  After each iteration, a 3D scan can be taken to review and analyze the design's manufacturability.  One the design is finalized, our team of skilled designers and CAD application specialists can create a CAD model from the latest 3D Scan, managing the entire design process if needed.

Manufacturing Launch Phase – During the launch phase of manufacturing, 3D Scanning proves invaluable for various applications.  We can scan tooling, gages, molds, dies, forms, pallets, and fixtures.  No matter the complexity or size, 3D Scan IT, Inc. has the expertise to handle it all, from textures to entire facilities.

Injection Mold Grain Reverse Engineering – Working with a graining company, we successfully duplicated a complicated acid etching process used for creating the texture of the plastic parts in a mold.   By employing 3D Scanning, determined the number of ‘acid baths’ required for a particular texture and accurately captured its shape.

Automotive Manufacturing: For an automated welding production line, we utilized laser trackers to ensure precises equipment installation on the factory floor.  We also measured and certified the positioning of robots and welding fixtures to match the CAD model.  Throughout the production line, we validated the sub-assemblies' accuracy, making adjustments as necessary to meet design tolerances.

Starting with an empty building, we were asked to provide measurement services throughout the production line assembly process and through the initial part build cycles.  We started the project in a new building with a bare, freshly poured concrete floor.  Using our laser trackers, we marked the floor where all the equipment was supposed to be installed.  This ensured our customer that the robots and cabling would be correctly positioned as per the factory design CAD model.  Next, we leveled each of the robots which were mounted to a 7th axis rail system and each of the welding fixtures location.  Once the welding fixtures were installed, we certified the assembly of the tooling by shimming each detail to its nominal location.  Once certified, we measured the exact installed robot location relative to welding fixtures in order to update the simulated welding programs to the build condition of the work cell.  Once the line was operational, we measured the subassemblies from each of the assembly station and performed adjustments in order to produce a subassembly which met the designed tolerances.  Once through the entire production line, we validated the final assembly by measuring a sample of parts.

Mold Verification - After commissioning a mold design, it's essential to verify that the finished mold aligns with the CAD design and manufacturing tolerance.  through 3D scanning, we can thoroughly inspect and validate nearly all aspects of the mold, including critical surfaces, parting lines, lifters, and GD&T features. i

Automotive – Stamping Dies & Forming Tools: Addressing the challenge of "spring back" in sheet metal and soft material parts during the manufacturing launch phase, we employ 3D scanning to capture tool modifications.  This data enables the creation of updated CAD models, aiding in achieving the desired final product shape.
